Inside the White Helmets

“To save a life is to save all humanity.”

Raed is the head of the Syrian Civil Defence, also known as the White Helmets. The Syrian Civil Defence is a volunteer organization created in 2013, and made of former bakers, teachers, electricians and other “ordinary” Syrians who now work together to save the lives of those wounded during attacks.

There are 2,700 rescue workers who make up The White Helmets, who have so far saved over 62,000 lives from the rubble of air-strikes in rebel-held areas of
Syria. This year, the Syrian Civil Defence were awarded the Right Livelihood Award, and were Nobel Peace Prize nominees.

Peace talks vision

The vision of the Peace Talks is to expand the space for dialogue about building peace and resolving conflict. Through individual Peace Talks, speakers from different sectors and industries share their personal stories, ideas and practical solutions to resolve conflict. The spirit of the Peace Talks is one of collaboration and reinforces that each and every person has a role to play in peace. The Peace Talks were co-founded by the United Nations Office in Geneva, the Geneva Peacebuilding Platform, and Interpeace with the support of the Swiss Government. The Peace Talks started in 2013 in Switzerland through the first-ever Geneva Peace Talks and have travelled to Stockholm, Nairobi and Ottawa.
